The Archives of the Prefecture of Rodopi were established with the publication of Law 1946/91 on the General Archives of the State. which sets out the legal framework governing the operation of the GSA as an independent public service reporting directly to the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs. The service began operating on November 1, 1994, in accordance with Decision IST/F.DIOIK/ 1156/24.10.1994 of the Historical Archives Department of the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs, and the G.A.K. of Rodopi has since been based in the capital of the prefecture, Komotini.
